Lewis reaches amateur finals

PINEHURST, NC — University of Arkansas golfer Stacy Lewis moved into the finals of the 91st Women’s Southern Golf Association Amateur Championship with a pair of wins on Thursday. Lewis, a Woodlands, Texas, native, opened her quarterfinal round in the championship flight with a two-and-one win over Meridian, Miss.’ Virginia Derby Grimes. Grimes, a Curtis Cup selection, got out to a slow start and Lewis was quickly two up at the turn. Grimes rebounded getting as close as one down but Lewis held on for the win. Lewis came back in the second match of the day with a big six-and-five win over Dawn Woodward of Franklin, Tenn., moving into Friday’s final. After another weather cell moved through the par 72, 6,033-yard Dogwood Course at the Country Club of North Carolina, Taylor Leon of Dallas, Texas, defeated defending champion Laura Coble two-and-one. Lewis faces Leon for the title in a 36-hole match Friday. Future Lady Razorback Alexandrea Schulte of Broken Arrow, Okla., lost Thursday, two-up, to Ashley Lambert of Bradenton, Fla., in the quarterfinals. Arkansas sophomore Whitney Sylvan also fell two-and-one to Martha Lang in the second flight semifinal match.
