Lewis struggles in first round of U.S. Women's Open

FAYETTEVILLE — University of Arkansas junior Stacy Lewis carded a seven-over 78 in the first round of the 2007 U.S. Women’s Open Thursday. Lewis teed off in one of the morning slots at the par-71 Pine Needles Lodge and Golf Club in Southern Pines, N.C., Thursday in her first-ever Open experience. She made par on the first hole and started well with four consecutive pars to open play. Lewis then made a bogey on the par-3, 205-yard fifth hole on the challenging golf course. She again settled in, however with back-to-back pars on six and seven. The Woodlands, Texas, native then picked up a stroke on number eight, finishing the front nine with a two-over 37. The back nine was equally tough with three bogeys on numbers 11, 16 and 17 and a double on 12. Lewis came off the golf course tied for 106th overall but her final position after the first round won’t be available until play is complete late Thursday.
