SOUTHPORT, Lancashire, UK — Former University of Arkansas standout Stacy Lewis fired an opening round one-under 71 at Royal Birkdale Golf Club in Southport, Lancashire, at the RICOH Women’s British Open Thursday. Lewis, the defending champion of the British Open, is tied for third overall, three strokes off the lead. Lewis’ scorecard featured three bogeys and four birdies in the first round. She was quickly two-over on her round through the first three holes, but The Woodlands, Texas, native settled in with back-to-back birdies on the fifth and sixth holes. She picked up the third bogey on nine and turned plus-one but Lewis posted a two on the par-3 12th hole and birdied the 499-yard, par-5 15th hole to finish one-under for the day. Lewis hit 10 fairways in the first round and reached 11 greens in regulation on Thursday. “I think anything under par on this golf course is a good score,” said Lewis. “The opening holes are hard. I needed to stay patient and hang in there and that’s what I was able to do.” “I’m definitely not disappointed,” she added. “This course is so hard. I’m just happy to shoot something under par. In the red numbers is a good place to be.” Ayako Uehara leads the field with a four-under 68, followed by Mo Martin in second with 69. Three players including Sarah Kemp, Mina Harigae and Morgan Pressel, are tied for third with 70. Play continues through the weekend and fans can watch live on ESPN Friday from 9 a.m.-noon and Saturday and Sunday from 8 a.m.-noon.
