Lewis takes place in LPGA State Farm Classic

FAYETTEVILLE — University of Arkansas senior Stacy Lewis faces some of the best names in women’s golf this week, teeing it up at the State Farm Classic in Springfield, Ill., Friday-Sunday. Lewis is one of two amateurs in the field which features professional golfers such as defending champion Annika Sorenstam, 2007 U.S. Solheim Cup Team rookie selection Morgan Pressel and Karrie Webb who is second on the money list to name a few. The event is the first of two back-to-back LPGA events for Lewis and the third one of the summer for The Woodlands, Texas, native. Lewis finished tied for fifth overall at the Kraft Nabisco Championship in the spring and played at the Jamie Farr Owens Corning Classic in July. Lewis will also compete at the LPGA NW Arkansas Championship presented by John Q. Hammons at Pinnacle Country Club Sept. 7-9. "Stacy is just an outstanding player," said Arkansas head coach Shauna Estes. "She just does things right and her exemptions are a testament to that. Stacy’s work ethic is great and her game is right where she needs it to be. Stacy gets better with each round and to be able to test your skills against some of the best in the game is a unique opportunity for a college player." Lewis’ collegiate and amateur trophy cases are full. She capped off her junior season at Arkansas winning the 2007 NCAA Championship and earning the Dinah Shore Trophy. A three-time all-American and first-team all-Southeastern Conference selection, Lewis holds nearly every school record at Arkansas. On the amateur level, Lewis finished the summer of 2006 as Golfweek’s No. 1-ranked player and was again ranked in the top spot in 2007. She recently paced the United States to both the women’s and team titles at the Copa de las Americas in Canada and earned medalist honors at the World University Games. Lewis tees off at 2:11 p.m. and plays with Paige Mackenzie and Simi Mehra in the first round. The Golf Channel will air all four rounds of action beginning at 12:00 p.m. Central Thursday-Sunday.
