Lewis wins first match play round at Amateur

PINEHURST, NC — University of Arkansas golfer Stacy Lewis continues to play well winning her match six-and-four in second round action at the 91st Women’s Southern Golf Association Amateur Championship at the Country Club of North Carolina Tuesday. Lewis, a Woodlands, Texas, native went off early Tuesday after an hour delay at the par 72, 6,033 yard Dogwood Wood Course. She was tied with opponent Kathleen Stranberg, an incoming North Carolina freshman, through the first seven holes but birdied her next five taking the lead and winning by six with four holes to play. Lewis faces 2004 USGA Women’s Senior Champion and Fort Smith, Ark., native Carolyn Creekmore, now of Texas, Wednesday. Lewis fired her second consecutive round of 66 yesterday to lead the field by three shots after the stroke play portion of the event. Lady’Back teammate Whitney Sylvan also competed posting an 83 after the stroke play. She is paired with Meredith Roberts and results were not yet available. Future Lady’Back Alexandrea Schulte is also competing at the event. Schulte, Broken Arrow, Okla., native and Bishop Kelley graduate opened with a 75 and is paired with Laura Coble in the first round of match play. Coble is the defending champion and the Georgian notched a two-and-one win over Schulte in match play. Today’s play will cut the field to 16 with a single match play round on Wednesday.
