Lewis wins Stanford Intercollegiate; Arkansas fourth

FAYETTEVILLE – Stacy Lewis took home medalist honors leading the University of Arkansas women’s golf team to a fourth-place finish against some of the country’s best teams at the Stanford Intercollegiate in Palo Alto, Calif., Sunday.

Lewis fired a two-under 211 on the par 71,6089-yard Stanford Golf Course edging Arizona State’s Jennifer Osborn by one stroke.

“Stacy played great,’ said head coach Shauna Estes. “This is a tremendous win for her against some of the best players in the country. Stacy stuck to her game plan and executed her shots. It’s just what you’d expect from her. She loves this golf course and it’s really a great win.”

Lewis helped Arkansas to a fourth place team finish as the Lady’Backs turned in their best round of the tournament with a 289 for 886. Fourth-ranked Arizona State won the event with an 862, coming from behind for the victory. Second-ranked Duke was second with an 866 followed by top-ranked UCAL at 872 and No. 13 Arkansas with an 886 (299-298-289). Number 11 California was s fifth with 890 with No. 8 Georgia (896), No. 7 Arizona (897), No. 18 Pepperdine (898), No. 25 and host Stanford (917) and no. 14 Vanderbilt (920) rounding out the top 10.

“I’m really proud of the team,” said Estes. “Their hard work really paid off and they are seeing the benefits of that work. We got out to a fast start and were able to hold off some teams behind us.”

Arkansas had several good individual performances this weekend. Sophomore Kristin Ingram rebounded from a 79 on the first day playing the next two rounds at one-over. Ingram tied for 21st overall with a 222 (79-72-71) in a season-best performance.

Junior Lucy Nunn worked around a tough second round to tie for 29th with a 224 (79-72-71) and sophomore Alex Schulte tallied a 233 (78-76-79) to tie for 47th. Freshman Kelli Shean finished tied for 57th overall with a 235 (77-81-77) rounding out the Arkansas scores.

Arkansas returns to the golf course for the final event of the 2007 fall traveling to Tuscaloosa, Ala., for the UA Ann Rhodes Intercollegiate Oct. 26-28.
