FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Junior Daniel Lincoln is the Southeastern Conference Male Cross Country Athlete of the Week it was announced by the league on Monday.
Lincoln took individual honors last weekend at the Chile Pepper Invitational in a personal- best time of 29:52 on the 10-kilometer course. In the process, the Fayetteville, Ark., native led the Razorbacks to their third team title in as many outings this season.
Lincoln is the only returnee from the Hogs’ national championship lineup of a year ago. Arkansas cross country head coach John McDonnell says Lincoln has effortlessly embraced his role as the team leader.
“It is definitely a great honor for him,” McDonnell said. “When you consider the competition he was up against, it makes it even more impressive. I’ve been very happy with the way he has responded to being the leader of this team. He is the type of kid that leads by example. He lets the others know what we have to do. Fortunately he has a bunch of guys that want to do what he is asking them to do.”
Lincoln has finished either first or second in each of Arkansas’ three meets this season. He tied for the individual title with teammate Alistair Cragg in the Arkansas Invitational on Sept. 8, before earning runner-up honors at the Cowboy Jamboree on Sept. 29. Last weekend, Lincoln won the individual crown outright to pace the Razorbacks to victory.
In other cross country news, Arkansas is once again holding steady at No. 3 in the MONDO national cross country rankings. The Razorbacks are listed behind Colorado and Stanford in the poll. Colorado received 14 first-place votes in this week’s poll while the Hogs garnered the other two first-place votes.
Arkansas returns to the course on Oct. 29 at the SEC Cross Country Championships in Auburn, Ala. The Hogs will be the favorite to clinch their 28th-consecutive conference cross country title including their 11th-consecutive SEC crown.
