Lingmerth scores USA beats Europe

PORTRUSH, Northern, Ireland – David Lingmerth picked up a second point for the Europeans in the 2010 Palmer Cup by defeating Jonathan Randolph (Ole Miss), but the final competition of the event was split even, 4-4, and the USA regained control of the prize for the first time since 2007.

Lingmerth went 2-2 in his four Palmer Cup matches, dropping the first two as a member of a doubles team and then sweeping his two singles matches. The final round of the Palmer Cup saw Lingmerth get out to a good start with a par on the opening hole of the Royal Portrush Golf Club and a one up lead on Randolph. Randolph made the match all square on the second hole, but Lingmerth regained the lead with a par on the fourth. Arkansas’ Swede would hold a one-hole lead until the seventh hole when Randolph moved the match to all square once more.

Lingmerth would take the lead once more on the eighth hole with a par and never looked back, winning the match on the 18th, two up. The point by Lingmerth in the third match of the day was the second by the Europeans and kept them in striking distance with four matches left. The match would play out with Europeans claiming matches five and seven, but USA victories in the sixth and eighth secured the team victory.
