Long jumpers improve at Razorback Invitational

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Arkansas Razorback women’s track and field completed day one of the Razorback Invitational at the Randal Tyson Track Center on Friday. Events will resume at 9 a.m. Saturday with the women’s shot put.

The long jump continues to be a strong event for the Razorbacks as senior Peter-Gaye Beckford and freshman Whitney Jones both improved their season bests.

Beckford finished second overall in the field of 32 competitors. Her mark measured in at 20-1.25 and is an improved NCAA provisional qualifier.

Jones, who has re-set her personal best three times this season, earned a bronze finish with her jump of 19-11.5.

"Whitney Jones is very mature for her age," head coach Lance Harter said. "She has the ability to compete in so many different events and she is a true competitor. She also has a great ability to bounce back day to day. She’ll get a good rest in tonight and come back for the 60 meters and the triple jump tomorrow."

Jones also competed in the 200 meters Friday night. She finished sixth among the 92 runners. She clocked a time of 24.29.

Karen Thomas made her Razorback debut in the 200 meters and clocked a 25.96 to finish 56th.
