TULSA, Okla. – The University of Arkansas women’s tennis team ended the ITA Central Regional Championships on a high note Sunday as senior Kate Lukomskaya defeated Malika Rose of Oklahoma State, 7-5, 7-6, to finish the weekend at 2-1.
“I thought we competed well across the board today,” Arkansas head coach Michael Hegarty said. “The quality was high for the most part and we can really build on these performances today.”
The Razorbacks only had three players in action on Sunday, all in the consolation draw. Both senior Emily Carbone and junior Claudine Paulson were dropped in their matches, but didn’t go down quietly. Carbone bounced back from a first set loss to Kanyapat Narattana of Oklahoma State, to win her second set and force a deciding third set. Unfortunately, it would be Narattana, who would come out on top with the 1-0(7) set win to take the match.
Paulson was ousted in straight sets in her match with Whitney Wofford of Oklahoma, but both sets were decided in 7-6 tiebreakers. Ultimately, the Razorbacks finished the regional with a 6-6 singles record and a 3-2 doubles record. Both Paulson and Lukomskaya earned two singles wins over the three days of play to lead the Razorbacks. Paulson continues to lead the team in wins with a 5-3 record.
The Razorbacks will now get a slight break before their final tournament of the fall at the Memphis Classic, which runs Nov. 4-6.
