Magee earns SEC weekly honor

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – University of Arkansas junior Casey Jo Magee was selected as the SEC Gymnast of the Week the league office announced today. It is the second weekly honor for Magee and she becomes the third Arkansas gymnast to earn multiple weekly honors. “Today’s her day,” joked Arkansas co-head coach Rene Cook. “She’s Irish and the SEC Gymnast of the Week. It is nice to see her be successful in a big meet environment and then be rewarded. She had to work hard to get through her routines and she showed a lot of maturity.” Magee won the seventh all-around title of the year and the 11th of her career Friday at the TWU Quad meet. She tied the school record, a record she set earlier this year, scoring a 39.525 in the win. Magee helped the Razorbacks go 1-2-3 on the awards stand on every event. She tied the second-best vault mark in program history winning that title with a 9.925. Magee also won the floor title tying the school record with a 9.95. Magee’s junior year has been rock solid. The Eugene, Ore., native won five consecutive all-around titles to open the year including a big victory near her hometown at Oregon State University. She was back on the awards stand at No. 6 LSU before getting number seven at TWU last week. In addition to her all-around titles, Magee has won or tied for the win on 14 individual events this year, more than any other Razorback this season. This week’s SEC honor is the final weekly honor prior to the SEC Championship at the Sommet Center in Nashville, Tenn., Saturday, March 21. Arkansas returns home hosting the 2009 NCAA South Central Regional April 4, in Barnhill Arena. For more information about Arkansas gymnastics log on to ArkansasRazorbacks.com.
