Mahon leads Arkansas to third place on the links

Jump to complete results FAYETTEVILLE – The 11th-ranked University of Arkansas women’s golf team vaulted out of the gate with a third-place finish at a top-notch tournament, the Mason Rudolph Women’s Championship, in Nashville, Tenn., Sunday. Arkansas posted a final round 297, the second-best round of the day, to finish with 884 (291-296-297) and third place. Second-ranked Duke won the event with 878 (295-297-296), followed by fourth-ranked Georgia at 881 (285-293-303). "I’m super proud of the team," said head coach Kelley Hester. "The conditions were really tough today. It was really windy. We were one shot off the low round on the final day and that should give us a boost of confidence. It says a lot about this team." Senior Country Mahon was Arkansas’ top finisher with a career-best 221 (74-73-74) and was plus-five on the par-72, Ironhorse Course at The Legends. Senior Amanda McCurdy pulled herself up to a tie for 16th overall with a 223 (77-74-72) with improvement in each round while sophomore all-American Stacy Lewis finished tied for 21st with a 224 (70-77-77). Freshman Lucy Nunn slipped to a tie for 26th overall in her first collegiate event with a 226 (72-72-82) and sophomore Ashley Medders carded a 228 (75-79-74) to tie for 30th overall. Senior Lindsey Hinshaw, competing as an individual, tied for 66th overall with a 236 (76-78-82). "Everyone hung in there even when it got hard," said Hester. "Lucy had a tough final round but it was a great learning experience. I’m pleased with where we’re at right now." Hester should be. Her 11th-ranked Lady’Backs finished the weekend ahead of top-ranked UCL who was fourth with an 885. Number five Auburn was fifth with an 889, followed by No. 7 Arizona State in sixth with an 891. Wake Forest, ranked No. 22, finished seventh overall with an 892, followed by No. 29 Vanderbilt (894), No. 9 Florida (910) and No. 16 Tulane (912) rounding out the top 10. The Lady Razorbacks return to the links Oct. 16-18, hosting their lone home event, the Tyson/Embassy Suites Invitational, at Pinnacle Country Club.
