FAYETTEVILLE – University of Arkansas junior golfers Amanda McCurdy and Courtney Mahon are both tied for 18th overall and move on to match play after two rounds at the 2005 U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links Championship in Kansas City, Mo. The Lady’Back duo are each in the club house with plus-four 146s despite taking different routes to get there. Both golfers advance to match play as the elimination style tournament continues through the weekend. McCurdy had a very solid first round on Monday with an even par 71 at the Swopes Memorial Golf Course. The El Dorado, Ark., native collected just one birdie while doubling the third and eighth holes in Tuesday’s round for a plus-for 75. Mahon’s play was more even with back-to-back 73s on Monday and Tuesday. The Topeka, Kan., native was even at the turn but picked up a pair of strokes on holes 10 and 18 to finish the day. Teenager Angela Park and Mari Chun at 136 after two rounds. The event began weeks ago when 753 women from around the United States began qualifying at local sites. The top 144 moved on to the Kansas City site beginning play on Monday. The field will compete in back-to-back rounds of stroke play with the lowest 64 scores moving on to match play beginning Wednesday. Play continues through Saturday in the elimination-style final rounds. The winner of the U.S. Amateur Public Links event receives a trophy and several exemptions for the upcoming amateur season.
