FAYETTEVILLE – University of Arkansas quarterback Ryan Mallett has been featured on Sports Illustrated’s Southeastern Conference preview edition. Mallett is the first Razorback football player to be featured on the cover since Darren McFadden graced SI’s front in 2007.
Mallett, a preseason All-SEC first-team honoree, has figured into college football discussions around the country since the end of his 2009 campaign with Arkansas. In his first year in the SEC, Mallett lead the league in touchdown passes (30), passing yards per game (278.8) and total offense per game (276.5). The Texarkana, Ark., native guided the Razorbacks to a 20-17 overtime victory over East Carolina in the 2010 AutoZone Liberty Bowl, earning the bowl’s Most Valuable Player award.
Mallett joins a storied past of Razorback football players appearing on the magazine’s cover. UA’s Harry Jones was the first in 1965, followed by Razorbacks Ron Calcagni and Ben Cowins appearing with former head coach Lou Holtz in 1978. In 2007, former UA running back standout Darren McFadden was featured on both the SEC preview edition and a special conference commemorative version. Fred Marshall and former head coach and athletics director Frank Broyles appeared on the latter issue with McFadden.
