Mallett named to Maxwell Award watch list
SOUTHAMPTON, Pa. – University of Arkansas quarterback Ryan Mallett has been named to the 2010 Maxwell Award watch list, it was announced Monday by the Maxwell Football Club. The honor, in its 74th year, is presented to the outstanding collegiate football player in America annually and is named in honor of sportswriter Robert W. "Tiny" Maxwell.
Mallett, a junior from Texarkana, Ark., returns to the Razorbacks after a record-setting 2009 season under center. The preseason All-SEC first-team honoree threw for 3,624 yards and 30 touchdowns last season, leading UA to an 8-5 record, including a victory in the 2010 AutoZone Liberty Bowl. In his first season in the Southeastern Conference, Mallett led the league in touchdown passes, passing yards per game (278.8) and total offense (276.5). The Razorback signal caller was second in the conference and seventh nationally in passing efficiency (152.5).
Mallett returns to action this year having tied or broken 16 school records. The 32 career touchdowns he’s responsible for and 30 career touchdown passes rank as the highest totals by an active SEC player entering 2010.
Semifinalists for the Maxwell Award will be announced Nov. 8 and three finalists for the award will be announced Nov. 22. The winner of the 2010 Maxwell Award will be announced as part of the Home Depot ESPNU College Football Awards Show, being held Dec. 9. The formal presentation of the honor will be made at the Maxwell Football Club Awards Gala hosted by Harrah’s Entertainment Atlantic City, March 4, 2011.
The watch list candidates have been chosen by the Maxwell Football Club’s Selection Committee. The award is voted on by members of the Maxwell Football Club, NCAA sports information directors, head coaches and selected national media are eligible to vote for these awards.
