McCurdy blisters course at Amateur

FAYETTEVILLE — University of Arkansas junior golfer Amanda McCurdy fired a three-under 69 vaulting up the leaderboard at the 105th U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship in Roswell, Ga., Tuesday. McCurdy, who was as high as tied for eighth place with players still out on the course, had the second-lowest round of the tournament thus far and moved up several spots on the leaderboard with a two-day 149 (75-69). McCurdy seems to have a lock on making the cut of the top 64 golfers who move on to match play over the next several days. McCurdy, an El Dorado, Ark., native, teed off in the morning Tuesday beginning her day on the first hole. She birdied two, five, six and seven with one bogy at the Settindown Creek Course at the Ansley Golf Club to go three-under on the first nine. That was a position she would hold for the day playing the final nine even. McCurdy finished second at the 2004 U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship in Erie, Pa. Her runner-up finish earned the Lady’Back an exemption into the 2005 U.S. Women’s Open where the first-timer made the cut and finished tied for 38th in the talented field. McCurdy and several of her teammates are also looking forward to the upcoming 103rd North and South Women’s Amateur Championship at Pinehurst Resort, Aug. 8. Courtney Mahon, Lindsey Hinshaw and Sarah Trew, all of whom will be seniors in 2005-06, along with Stacy Lewis, who will be a sophomore, are taking part.
