Senior Amanda McCurdy fired a two-over 74 and is tied for second with two others after the first day. UTEP’s Jullianne Kim leads the field with an even-par 72. "Stacy (Lewis) and Amanda played really well today," said Arkansas head coach Kelley Hester. "They both got out to a slow start but really finished well." McCurdy is coming off her second win of the season at Puerto Rico last week and continued to play well Friday. The El Dorado, Ark., native was plus-two after the first nine and finished even on the back to lead Arkansas. Stacy Lewis also opened well. Lewis, who tied for fourth in Puerto Rico, was also even on the back nine. The second nine seemed to be better for the Lady Razorbacks with four of the five players improving. Senior Lindsey Hinshaw finished with a plus-six 78 for Arkansas. Senior Courtney Mahon and sophomore Ashley Medders both shot 80 in the opening round. Mahon’s round improved in the second nine with a plus three on the tough course. Freshman Lucy Nunn, competing as an individual, shot an 84 and is tied for 59th overall. "Cort had some good up and downs to hit 80," said Hester. "The scores were high in general and the wind picked up in the afternoon. It’s a tough golf course but it’s fair. The wind blew in the opposite dir today than in our practice round so it’s like playing a different golf course. I think we’re close to playing much better and we’re going to come out tomorrow and see what we can do." Host and 20th-ranked Texas A&M leads the field on the Aggies home course. A&M carded a 306, just one stroke better than a charging Arkansas. The Lady Razorbacks are in second place ahead of No. 74 Oklahoma who counted a 315. No. 27 Southern Methodist and No. 86 Texas-El Paso are tied for fourth with a 317 and No. 45 Texas Christian carded a 318 rounding out the top six teams. A trio of teams are tied for seventh in No. 53 Oregon State, No. 23 Kent State and No. 68 Kansas with a 321. Three more are tied for 10th with 325. They are No. 26 Baylor, No. 34 Missouri and No. 39 Tulsa. Second and third round play continues Saturday and Sunday. For more information about Arkansas golf, log on to LADYBACKS.COM.
