McCurdy leads the field after first round action
Jump to results FAYETTEVILLE – University of Arkansas senior Amanda McCurdy fired a one-under 70 and is tied for the lead after first round action at the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Classic in Knoxville, Tenn., Friday. The El Dorado, Ark., native began her day on the back nine playing even with one birdie and one bogey through the first half of the day. She bettered her play on the front nine with a pair of birdies and only one bogey finishing with 70 and leading the third-ranked Lady Razorbacks to sixth place after the first day against one of the toughest fields the team has faced the year. “It was actually a little disappointing today,” said Arkansas head coach Kelley Hester. “The greens were really fast and we didn’t putt well, especially coming in. The weather changed late in the round and the wind picked up and it began to rain a bit. I hope that will slow up the greens a bit for tomorrow.” Sixth-ranked Purdue grabbed the first round lead posting a four-over 288, followed by No. 23 Michigan State who turned in a 294. Kent State is third with a 296, followed by the Swedish Junior National Team who carded a 297 to tie for fourth place with No. 4 Georgia. Arkansas is sixth with a first-day 300 ahead of No. 18 Southern Methodist who counted a 304 and No. 36 North Carolina who shot 305. McCurdy leads Arkansas after first round action followed by sophomore all-American Stacy Lewis who counted a 75 and is tied for 19th. Senior Courtney Mahon is tied for 27 with a 76, followed by Ashley Medders, Lindsey Hinshaw and Sarah Trew, who is playing as an individual all tied for 50th with 79s. Play continues Saturday and Sunday at the Cherokee Country Club in Knoxville, Tenn.
