Midweek Report: Week 2

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Each week during the season, the Midweek Report will serve as a recap of the previous week of action for Arkansas Soccer, while previewing the week ahead and keeping up with national rankings and individual accolades.

Week 2 Recap

Arkansas won its lone game last week, upsetting No. 2 Duke 2-1 at Razorback Field in front of a record-setting crowd. The win was the program’s first over a top-10 ranked opponent and a subsequent shutout win three days later against UMKC catapulted the Razorbacks into the National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll at No. 17.

Freshman midfielder Stefani Doyle earned the Southeastern Conference’s Offensive Player of the Week and TopDrawerSoccer.com Team of the Week accolades for her game-winning goal against the Blue Devils and for scoring four goals in three matches.

4-0 Record and Ranking

Four victories – two on the road against James Madison and VCU, as well as two at home against Duke and UMKC – have propelled Arkansas to a strong 4-0 start for only the second time in head coach Colby Hale’s tenure. In 2013, the Razorbacks went 7-0 before falling to TCU on the road in a tightly contested 2-1 double overtime loss.

The Razorbacks’ No. 17 ranking is the team’s highest since Sept. 2014 when they were No. 18 in the NSCAA top 25. In a separate poll, Soccer America placed Arkansas as high as ninth in the nation.

Looking Ahead

Arkansas will finish its three-game homestand tomorrow at 6 p.m. against Northern Iowa (1-2-1) before taking on George Washington (3-0-0) and Mississippi State (2-2-0) on the road. The Sun., Sept. 4 match against the Colonials will be broadcast live on Cox Sports TV and the Fri., Sept. 9 game against the Bulldogs will be streamed live on SEC Network+.

Home Support

The Aug. 26 game against Duke was the most-attended home game in Razorback Field history. 3,010 fans attended the match, shattering the previous record set against TCU on Aug. 23, 2015 by 29 percent. The home opener record has been topped in each of the past three years dating back to 2014.

With two home games in the books, Arkansas ranks ninth in the nation in total attendance (4,012) and second in the SEC, but fourth in average attendance (2,006) nationally and third in the SEC.

Stats Watch

Doyle currently leads the team in goals (4), points (9), shots (12) and shots on goal (6). Nationally, she’s ranked 10th in total goals, 20th in goals per game, 38th in points per game and 15th in total points.

Senior Alexandra Fischer is ranked fourth nationally in total assists and 11th in assists per game.
