Miseviciute named SEC Player of the Week

Birmingham, Ala. – University of Arkansas freshman tennis player Aurelija Miseviciute was named the Southeastern Conference’s Player of the Week by the conference office in Birmingham, Ala., Tuesday afternoon.

Miseviciute went 4-0 last weekend in singles and doubles in Arkansas’ weekend sweep of Auburn and Alabama. The Klaipeda, Lithuania, native’s wins served as integral parts in lifting the team to first place in the Western Division race. Miseviciute and the rest of the Lady Razorbacks can clinch the division outright on April 16, at LSU.

“It was an exciting weekend for us and Aurelija was well-deserving of this honor,” Arkansas head coach Michael Hegarty said. “She is doing a wonderful job this season.”

In singles, Miseviciute captured the biggest SEC win of her young career thus far with a straight-set win over Alabama’s No. 14 Robin Stephenson, 6-4, 6-0. Miseviciute’s 6-0 shutout is the only set shutout Stephenson has sustained all season.

In March, the Lady’Back freshman won her biggest match this season over the current fourth ranked player in the country and 2005 ITA Indoor Individual Champion Zuzana Zemenova of Baylor.

Miseviciute is currently ranked 31st nationally in singles, and is ranked fifth among all freshman.

In doubles, Miseviciute teamed up with usual partner freshman Ela Kaluder against Auburn’s Ashley Cowart and Alex Haney for an 8-2 win.

On Sunday, April 9, Miseviciute teamed up with senior Melissa Cornett for the first time all season for a pivotal match against Alabama. Down, 7-5, with the other two doubles courts split, Miseviciute and Cornett went on a four-game winning streak to lock Arkansas’ 10th doubles point of the season.

The Lady’Backs are back on the court tomorrow, April 12, at 5 p.m. for a midweek showdown against Oklahoma. Match time is set for 5:00 p.m.

“It’s important that we treat this match against Oklahoma like we have treated our conference matches lately,” Hegarty said.
