FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – After helping Arkansas win two games last week, junior guard/forward Jonathon Modica has been named the Southeastern Conference Player of the Week.
Modica had a big week for the Razorbacks. In Wednesday’s win over Georgia, he scored 14 points on seven-of-12 shooting, and had four rebounds and two assists. He also scored the 1,000th point of his career in that game and now ranks 26th on UA’s all-time list with 1,030.
In Saturday’s win over LSU, he had season and game highs of 25 points and nine rebounds. He was 10-of-16 shooting.
“I’m happy for him,” UA head coach Stan Heath says. “It is well-deserved. Anytime you put up numbers and win games, it’s a good thing. He’s getting a lot done in the team concept. He’s always scored, but now he’s doing it with other guys involved. His emotion is very positive.”
For the week, he averaged 19.5 points, 6.5 rebounds and 1.0 assist while shooting 60.7 percent from the field (17-28).
“When Jonathan has a little swagger and is confident, he plays at a different level,” Heath says. “We originally started him and lately we have put him back in the starting lineup and he has been excited. His teammates are feeding off that right now.”
Arkansas beat Georgia, 62-47, and LSU, 65-62, to improve to 17-7 overall and 5-6 in the SEC.
The Smackover, Ark., native is averaging 10.2 points and 3.0 rebounds for the year while shooting 52.7 percent from the floor and 44.2 percent on three-pointers.
