Morris Continues Run on Bowerman Watch List

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – For the fourth time this season, Sandi Morris appears on the Bowerman Watch List as released Thursday afternoon. Dating back to the indoor season in which she won the NCAA title in the pole vault, Morris has won seven-consecutive meets including a collegiate-record effort at the John McDonnell Invitational last weekend for which she was recognized as the USTFCCCA National Athlete of the Week and SEC Field Athlete of the Week.

In her last outing, Morris broke the outdoor collegiate record with a final clearance of 4.62m/15-1.75 to become just the fourth woman in NCAA history to eclipse the 15-foot barrier. She now owns the top-two clearances of the outdoor season, coupled with her 14-11 showing at the season-opening Texas Relays. Morris surpassed the previous NCAA record of 15-1.5 held by former Arkansas standout and 2011 Bowerman finalist Tina Sutej.

The Bowerman award, which debuted in 2009, is presented annually by the USTFCCCA to the most outstanding male and female collegiate track and field athletes in the nation. In total, the winners from the award’s first five years have won three Olympic medals, two World Championship titles and six World Championship medals overall. The next women’s Watch List will be announced May 6.

The season continues this weekend with the distance crew heading to Walnut, Calif., for the Mt. SAC Relays which begin Thursday night and continue through Saturday. Through the first three weeks of their outdoor campaign, the Razorbacks have 13 top-10 NCAA efforts including nation-leading marks from Morris and Dominique Scott (32:11.60) at 10,000 meters. In this week’s USTFCCCA poll, Arkansas is the No. 4 team in the country.

The Razorbacks’ next home meet is scheduled for May 1 with the Arkansas Twilight. For more info regarding purchasing tickets for home events, call 800-982-HOGS (4647), email raztk@uark.edu or visit the Razorback Ticket Center located just east of Baum Stadium.
