Multis Off To A Good Start In Texas

Day One Hept. Results

AUSTIN, Texas – Arkansas women’s track and field multis Taliyah Brooks, Leigha Brown, Kelsey Herman and Payton Stumbaugh got off to a good start on day one of the heptathlon competition at the 90th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays, presented by Spectrum, on Wednesday morning.

Point Totals: 2016 Day One | 2017 Day One
• Taliyah Brooks: 3,613 points | 3,691 points (+78)
• Payton Stumbaugh: 3,569 points | 3,652 points (+83)
• Kelsey Herman: 3,368 points | 3,585 points (+217)
• Leigh Brown: 3,396 points | 3,541 points (+145)

The talented quartet took control of the event from the start, led by Stumbaugh, who won the 100-meter hurdles in 13.27 seconds to get out to an early lead. Stumbaugh went on to close out the day with another event victory as the Springdale, Arkansas, native commandingly won the 200 by a .30-second margin with a season’s best of 23.65.

Although without an event title on day one, Brooks still proved herself a formidable contender, finishing no lower than ninth place in all four of the competitions. The defending Texas Relays heptathlon champion opened the meet with a third-place finish in the high hurdles which she followed up with a runner-up performance in the long jump. Brooks capped the day in similar fashion as Stumbaugh, posting a wind-assisted PR of 23.97 in the 200 – her first time dipping under 24 seconds in the event.

Herman also had a strong showing in the 200 as she posted a season’s best of 23.95 after finishing in second place. Prior to that race, Herman threw to a major PR of 12.69m/41-7 3/4 in the shot put to finish as the top Razorback in that event.

Brown rounded out the group, placing among the top eight in all four events. Her best finish came in the high jump as she cleared an outdoor PR of 1.76m/5-9 1/4 to place fifth.

Brooks, Brown, Herman and Stumbaugh head into tomorrow’s 11 a.m. CT long jump competition all on pace to set PRs in the heptathlon. Brooks and Stumbaugh currently sit in second and third place, respectively, behind former two-time SEC heptathlon champion Erica Bougard.
