FAYETTEVILLE — In celebration of its 2013 NCAA indoor title, the University of Arkansas men’s track and field team was honored Thursday evening in an on-campus dinner at the University House. The Razorbacks were also recognized for their winning performance at the 2013 SEC Indoor Championships. Both titles were won in front of Arkansas’ home crowd at the Randal Tyson Track Center in Fayetteville.
In addition to the remarks by Chancellor G. David Gearhart, the Razorback men were addressed by Vice Chancellor and Director of Athletics Jeff Long and their head coach Chris Bucknam. Arkansas’ participants at the national meet were given mini replicas of the NCAA trophy while all members of the team were awarded with a Chancellor’s Medal in recognition of their accomplishments.
The Razorback student-athletes and coaching staff was joined Thursday by members of the University of Arkansas administration and faculty. Current Razorbacks Nathanael Franks and Kevin Lazas stood to offer remarks, both taking time to thank the University for hosting the dinner and addressing their teammates. Franks is the recent recipient of the 9th Annual Coach Wooden Citizenship Cup, while Lazas won an NCAA title in the heptathlon at the indoor meet.
Arkansas’ win at the NCAA Indoor Championship was its 20th national indoor title in program history and its 41st NCAA crown overall. The team won three NCAA event titles over the March 8-9 competition on its way to 74 points. Lazas won the heptathlon, Andrew Irwin won his second national indoor title in the pole vault and the 4×400-meter relay team of Neil Braddy, Caleb Cross, Akheem Gauntlett and Marek Niit broke the collegiate record with a winning time of 3:03.50.
The Razorbacks’ outdoor season continues this weekend with the Arkansas Invitational. The meet will be held Saturday at John McDonnell Field in Fayetteville. Field events begin at 11 a.m. (CT) with running events slated to be start at 4 p.m. This weekend’s event will also extend to include a decathlon which will begin Saturday and conclude Sunday.
