NCAA West prelims up next

FAYETTEVILLE – No. 9 Arkansas Razorback women’s track and field will continue the championship portion of the 2010 outdoor season with the NCAA West preliminary rounds, hosted by the University of Texas, Thurs.-Sat., May 27-29, at Mike A. Myers Stadium, in Austin, Texas.

In the current USTFCCCA rankings, the Razorbacks are listed at No. 9. Arkansas is one of four SEC schools in the top 25. LSU is No. 3, Florida is No. 7 and Auburn is No. 8. The 4×400-meter relay (Whitney Jones, Shelise Williams, Karen Thomas, Regina George) leads the NCAA and SEC in the event. Senior Katie Stripling leads the SEC and ranks No. 2 in the NCAA with a school-record clearance of 14-5.5 in the pole vault.

The Razorbacks will be represented by 16 student-athletes in 11 events at the NCAA West preliminary rounds. Williams will lead a Razorback quartet in the 400 meters. She will be joined by George, junior Edina Brooks and Thomas. The quartet, joined by Jones, will make up the legs of the 4×400-meter relay, currently ranked No. 1 with an NCAA-leading time of 3:31.05.

In the middle distances, freshman Stephanie Brown will run the 800 meters. Sophomores Kristen Gillespie and Samantha Learch will run the 1,500 meters. In the distance races, junior Miranda Walker will run the 5,000 meters and sophomore Cali George will compete in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.

Sophomore Brittany Hyter will compete in the 100-meter hurdles and the 400-meter hurdles and freshman Leah Orley will run the 400-meter hurdles.

The trio of pole vaulters is led by senior Katie Stripling. She is joined by sophomore Tina Sutej and senior Janice Keppler. Jones and junior Shantel Thompson will compete in the long jump and Thompson will triple jump.
