Netters hope to extend SEC winning streak

FAYETTEVILLE – The University of Arkansas women’s tennis team is at home this weekend as it looks to improve on its three match Southeastern Conference winning streak against Auburn and Alabama at the Wal-Mart Life and Fitness Center in Bentonville.

The Lady Razorbacks (7-8, 3-5) begin the weekend against Auburn (5-13, 0-8) Friday, April 7, at 2:00 p.m. Last year against the Tigers, the Lady’Backs ended their three-year conference losing streak with a 5-2 win. Against Auburn all-time, the Lady’Backs are 11-10, which includes a four-year winning streak from 1982-85.

On Sunday, April 9, the Lady’Backs face off against the division-leading Alabama Crimson Tide (8-8, 4-4). The Tide plays LSU on Friday, Apr. 7, and with a loss Baton Rouge, Arkansas could be playing Alabama for the Western Division lead on Sunday, April 9. Senior Robin Stephenson leads the way for the Tide this year.

Stephenson is currently No. 14 in the country in the ITA poll, boasting a 5-3 SEC record including a 6-2, 7-5 over Florida’s Diana Srebrovic. Stephenson and Arkansas freshman Aurelija Miseviciute could square off on centre court on Sunday.

Miseviciute is currently No. 31 in the country with the help of a three-match SEC winning streak. Six of her last seven matches have been wins, with four of those opponents ranked higher than 53rd.

“Our team is excited about the home matches this weekend,” Arkansas head coach Michael Hegarty said. “We have a huge amount to play for and we are looking strong in practice.”
