Netters turn heads in Atlanta

Atlanta, Ga.—After going 4-2 in singles on Friday, the University of Arkansas women’s tennis team turned heads of players and coaches on the second day of action at the SEC Fall Coaches Classic in Atlanta, Ga. With a 6-6 effort on Friday, the Lady Razorbacks captured their 90th win of the 2004 fall campaign. In singles, the Lady’Backs are 68-48 this fall. “Today was an exceptionally positive day for us,” said head coach Michael Hegarty. “We are getting exactly what we hoped.” Four matches came against LSU, with the Lady’Backs winning a pair. One of the wins came from Yawna Allen, captured her ninth win as a Lady’Back in a 6-4, 6-3 effort over LSU’s Marina Chiarelli. The other win over LSU came in C flight from Audrey Bordeleau. The Arkansas freshman captured her second straight win at the Classic over the Tiger’s Daysi Espinal, 7-6 (4), 6-3. Junior transfer Karina Ledaja garnered her team-leading 11th win of the fall with a 6-2, 6-2 pasting of Kentucky’s Danielle Petrisko. Whitney Morton won by default over Auburn’s Erin Gray. Junior Melissa Cornett lost in a three-set bout to LSU’s Slaten Spencer, 1-6, 3-6, 6-4. Allie Linden lost to Auburn’s Evan Epps, 6-4, 6-3. In doubles, both Arkansas wins came over Ole Miss. Ledaja and Linden paired up for the first time this fall in an 8-0 blanking of Ole Miss’s Claire Connerly and Sarah Sabin. Allen and Bordeleau defeated Carlin Cochran and Nika Koukhartchouk, 8-6. The Lady’Back tandem of Ledaja and Linden fell in their second match of the day to LSU’s Chiarelli and Camila Caliari, 8-6. Bordeleau and Allen also fell in their second match to South Carolina’s Hayley Rudman and Tarryn Rudman, 8-6. Morton and Cornett were bested twice on Friday, first by Kentucky’s Kim Coventry and Joelle Shwenk, 8-1, and then by South Carolina’s Fallon Koon and Miranda Gutierrez, 8-3. “Though Friday was an exceptional day in singles for us, Saturday will be the critical day this weekend,” Hegarty said.
