On Sunday, August 25th, over 100 new Razorback student-athletes joined the Office of Student-Athlete Success for the annual Razorback Student-Athlete Orientation, which creates the opportunity for new students to meet other new students and learn about what it means to be a Razorback. This year, not only were the new student-athletes participating, but some of their parents came as well to the first ever Razorback Parent Orientation.
The students-athletes were split into three groups to attend sessions about Responsible Choices, Personal Branding, and A Day in the Life of a Razorback. In the Responsible Choices session, led by Marcus Sedberry, the Director of Student-Athlete Development, student-athletes identified ways to make responsible choices and examined how those choices affect more than just themselves. In the Personal Branding session, led by Alison Nail, the Career Development Coordinator, they learned how to define their own personal brand, what the Razorback brand means, and how they can impact their brand.
In the Day in the Life of a Razorback session, led by Simeon Hinsey, the Director of External Operations and Student-Athlete Development, student-athletes learned that they are all starting out with a clean slate and that they have a support staff behind them for assistance. The student-athletes then had the opportunity to ask SAAC members questions about everyday life as a Razorback.
The first annual Razorback Parent Orientation was a success as well. Parents were introduced to the Athletic Director Jeff Long, Eric Wood, Associate Athletic Director for Student Athlete Services, and the Office of Student-Athlete Success staff. Parents had the opportunity to learn about compliance issues, the athletic training process, strength and conditioning, nutrition, and the Razorback Foundation from respective staff members. They also gathered information about some of the resources their student will have available at the University of Arkansas.
After the student-athletes finished orientation by calling the hogs and learning the fight song, they were escorted to Bud Walton Arena for a campus wide New Student Welcome. Then they returned back to the Bogle Academic Center for the Student- Athlete Welcome Back Picnic where they had the opportunity to meet fellow student-athletes, coaches, and athletic department staff to wrap up a busy day.
