Nieto earns second singles win

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Freshman Adriana Nieto picked up her second singles win of the weekend on Saturday to highlight a tough day of action for the Arkansas women’s tennis team at the Wichita State Fall Classic in Wichita, Kan.

Nieto opened her day with a 6-0, 6-2 loss to Oklahoma’s Teona Tsertsvadze but rebounded with a 6-0, 6-4 victory over Lily Wakim of Wichita State.

Lindsey Gray fell in her singles match 6-0, 6-0 to Alexandra Cristello from Oklahoma State.

Annemijn Koenen suffered a pair of tough losses on Saturday. The Chicago, Ill., native lost to Rone Van Wky of Arkansas State, 6-3,6-1 before dropping her second match 6-0, 6-4 at the hand of Jenny Herring, also of Arkansas State.

Razorback head coach Michael Hegarty was pleased with what he saw from his trio of walk-ons (Nieto, Koenen and Gray).

“Although the scores weren’t flattering, today our walk-on players gained valuable experience in a competitive environment,” Hegarty said. “Every match we play this weekend is a real positive for our development and we’ll look for a strong finish Sunday.”

In doubles action, the tandem of Koenen and Claudine Paulson fell to Wichita State’s duo of Lutfiana Budiharto and Stephanie Dalmacio 8-4. Koenen and Paulson will take on Sasha Belova and Nataliya Shatkovskaya from Oklahoma Sate for third place at 9 a.m. Sunday. Gray and Nieto dropped their match against Kansas State’s Maryna Chumak and Natasha Vieira by the score of 8-2.

Action continues Sunday at the Coleman Tennis Complex where the doubles final is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. Central Time followed by the final round of singles to follow at 10 a.m.
