Nina Drolc Named SEC Freshman of the Week

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — University of Arkansas freshman Nina Drolc was named the SEC Freshman of the Week, it was announced Tuesday.

Drolc picked up three event wins for the Cardinal and White in dramatic fashion, helping the Razorbacks sweep a triple dual meet against Missouri, Kentucky and Southern Illinois.

“All of the hard work that Nina has been doing showed up this past week,” head coach Sean Schimmel said. “She’s come in here and wanted to make a difference, and she brings that attitude in training every day and it reflects on her performances so far.”

To begin the meet, Drolc swam the final leg in the 200 medley relay. The Razorbacks were behind as Drolc swam the fastest relay split of her career and was the only swimmer to go under 23 seconds (22.76) as she out-touched the Missouri relay team by three hundredths of a second to take the win in the first race; Arkansas would never surrender the lead in the meet.

The Velenje, Slovenia native swam a personal best in the 100 freestyle to take the event win for Arkansas with a time of 50.89.

Going out of her freestyle element, Drolc took a stab at the 100 butterfly, finishing in fourth and scoring for the UA with a time of 56.56. It was the first time she swam the butterfly stroke this year. Her time of 56.56 was the fastest swum by any UA swimmer all season.

In the final event of the meet, the 400 freestyle relay, Drolc led things off for Arkansas as she recorded the fastest leadoff leg with a time of 50.97. Arkansas would win the race with a time of 3:25.02.

The freshman also holds the top three times in the 100 freestyle this season for Arkansas.

Drolc and the Razorbacks return to the pool on Nov. 15 as they compete in the Houston Cougar Invite in Houston, Texas.
