No. 13 Wichita State Holds Off Arkansas For 3-

FAYETTEVILLE, ARK. – Wichita State shortstop Brandon Green made a diving catch with two outs in the ninth inning on a sharp line drive by Patrick Woodruff with the tying run on third base to end a Razorback rally and preserve the Shockers’ 3-2 victory over Arkansas Tuesday night at Baum Stadium.
The loss snapped the Razorbacks’ eight-game non-conference winning streak and dropped the Hogs to 23-15 overall. Wichita State improved to 28-10 with the victory.
Gary Hogan, Jr., took the loss for Arkansas to fall to 3-5 on the year. Hogan allowed two runs, both earned, on five hits in three innings of work. Mathew Jakubov earned the win to move to 2-1. Jakubov pitched seven innings of two-hit ball allowing one run, unearned, on 80 pitches. Wichita State relief pitcher Justin Maureau earned his first save after allowing one run, earned, on two hits in two innings of work.
Trailing 3-1 in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Razorbacks mounted a rally. Andrew Wishy, who had two of Arkansas’ four hits on the night, singled deep in the hole at short to begin the inning. Ryan Fox drove a ball deep to right that was held up by the wind for the first out of the inning. Michael Conner then went down swinging for the second out.
Senior Jeff Fletcher laced a triple to right that scored Wishy and cut the lead to 3-2. Fletcher’s hit extended his season-long hitting streak to 11 games. The streak is the longest for a Razorback this season.
With the tying run at third and two outs, Woodruff laced a well-hit ball towards the gap in right, but Green came over to make the catch to end the game.
The four hits for Arkansas tied a season-low. The Razorbacks were also held to four hits in a 4-3 loss to Vanderbilt on March 30, in Nashville.
The Razorbacks jumped on the scoreboard first with a run in the first inning. Kirk McConnell singled to left and advanced to second when the Shocker’s left fielder booted the ball. Scott Bridges moved McConnell to third with a ground ball to first. Andrew Wishy then brought McConnell home with a ground out to first for a 1-0 Arkansas lead.
The Shockers took the lead with a pair of runs in the top of the second inning. Dustin Hawkins drove in the first run with a single that plated Ryan Owen. Brandon Green gave Wichita State the lead with a sacrifice fly to left that scored Shawn Smarsh.
Wichita State made it a 3-1 game when Hawkins doubled to lead off the eighth inning and came around to score on a single to center by Brian Burgamy.
Wichita State has now won two straight over the Razorbacks and earned their first win ever at Baum Stadium.
The Razorbacks will travel to Baton Rouge for a three-game series against the LSU Tigers this weekend at Alex Box Stadium. Game one is set for a 6:30 p.m. start Friday.
