FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The No. 5 Arkansas men’s track and field will open the 2016 outdoor season at John McDonnell Field Friday as they host the Arkansas Spring Invitational March 25-26. The meet will feature a large and competitive field including: Arkansas Baptist, Barton Community College, Illinois State, Iowa Central, Missouri, Missouri State, Ole Miss, Oklahoma State, South Dakota State, Southeast Missouri, Southern Illinois-Edwardsville, No. 15 Tulsa and Wichita State.
The first of three home stands for the Razorbacks, the Arkansas Spring Invitational will be followed by the John McDonnell Invitational (April 22-23) and the Arkansas Twilight (May 6).
The opening competition will provide a number of Razorback newcomers with the opportunity to gain experience contending with strong opponents in the presence of their home crowd. Arkansas veterans will also look to transition into the new season using the meet to continue to build on their base strength established during their indoor campaign.
“This meet is a great meet for some of our guys, who were just off making our postseason indoor squad, to open up,” said head coach Chris Bucknam. “There’s a number of great teams coming in so it makes for a solid meet to open our outdoor facility and get our guys acclimated to the different conditions that come with competing outdoors. We’re looking for a big outdoor season – we’ve got a lot work to do but I like the attitude our guys bring to every practice.”
The two-day meet will begin Friday, March 25 at 3 p.m. with the heptathlon followed by the decathlon. Saturday’s action will also kick off with the combined events at 10:30 a.m. with prime time action beginning with the 3,000-meter steeplechase at 3 p.m.
