No. 12 Arkansas falls to BYU

FAYETTEVILLE – Arkansas had its four-meet winning streak snapped at home on Friday as No. 28 Brigham Young upset the No. 12 Razorbacks in gymnastics, 195.10-195.025.

The Razorbacks had won four straight after losing their first two meets of the season. Arkansas is 4-3 overall and 4-1 in the Southeastern Conference.

"We need to get a whole lot better," co-head coach Rene Cook said. "That’s the same thing I’ve thought after every week. We’ll go back and assess our lineup and our errors, and go from there."

Arkansas led after the first two events, but the Cougars took the lead while they were on floor and Arkansas was on beam.

Individually, junior All-American Jaime Pisani won the all-around with a 39.375, vault with a 9.875 and floor with a 9.925. Freshman Katherine Grable won beam with a 9.85. Junior Genny Salvatore, in just her second meet in the competition lineup, won bars with a 9.80.

"Tonight it was especially awesome to be in the lineup (at home)," Salvatore said. "I wanted to hit my routine for my team. We still have to figure out what we want this season to be."

In the first rotation, Arkansas scored a 48.95 on vault.

Pisani led the way with a 9.875, followed by Scarlett Williams and Grable at 9.80, Jordan Salsberg a 9.75 and Amanda Siebert with a 9.725.

On bars, BYU had a 48.875 and was led by Raquel Willman and Jennifer Lezeu with a 9.80 each.

In the second rotation, the Razorbacks scored a 48.85.

Salvatore led the way with a 9.80, followed by Salsberg and Mariah Howdeshell at 9.775, and Pisani and Grable at 9.75.

Through two events, Arkansas led the meet 97.80-97.55.

Meanwhile on vault, the Cougars had a 48.675 and were led by Natalie Eyre’s 9.825.

In the third rotation, Arkansas had to count a fall on beam and scorerd a 48.275.

Grable led with a 9.85, followed by Pisani with a 9.825, Williams a 9.725, Salsberg a 9.70 and Shelby Salmon a 9.175.

Brigham Young had a 48.875 on floor to take a 146.425-146.075 lead through three events.

The Cougars were led on floor by Lezeu and Jessica Villegas with a 9.80 each.

BYU put the meet away in the final rotation with a 48.675 on beam while Arkansas had a 48.95 on floor.

The Cougars were led by Eyre with a 9.80

"We just need to get back to practice," Pisani said. "We’ve been working hard, but we just need to put it all together."

On floor for the Razorbacks, Pisani had a 9.925, followed by Grable with a 9.875, Kelci Lewis with a 9.80, Bailee Zumwalde with a 9.725 and Stacy Bartlett a 9.625.

Next week, Arkansas is back home in Barnhill Arena to face Florida on Friday at 7 p.m. The Gators were ranked No. 1 in the nation this week.
