LOS CABOS, Mexico — While a winter mix found its way to Fayetteville on Sunday, the No. 15 Arkansas men’s golf team opened play in sunny Los Cabos, Mexico, carding an opening round 299 at the Querencia Cabo Collegiate to sit in ninth place in the competitive 14-team field. The par 71 Los Cabos Querencia yielded just eight even-par or lower rounds out of a field of 78 players with redshirt sophomore Kolton Crawford supplying a team-low of even-par 71 to tie for fourth place. Out of the 14-team field, seven teams are ranked or received vote in the most recent Golf World/NIKE Golf Coaches Poll, but none finished the day under-par. Arkansas’ four-man score of 299 snapped a streak of four consecutive rounds at under-par, but it’s just five strokes out of third place. No. 16 Houston and SMU are tied for the lead after first round 288s. Crawford’s day started with a double-bogey on his first hole, but he rebounded by playing the next 17 holes two-under with 13 pars, three birdies and one bogey. Coming off his first under-par tournament of the year, Crawford went 13 holes without a bogey during his round, good for the longest streak by any player in the field. Senior Sebastian Cappelen supplied a two-over 73 that was highlighted by six birdies. One of six players in the field on the Ben Hogan Award Watch List, Cappelen birdied the final five holes on the front nine to shoot three-under 33 and is in a tie for 15th place. Arkansas’ low-man the first two tournaments of the spring, sophomore Taylor Moore contributed a 75, playing his final 14 holes at even-par. Sophomore Nicolas Echavarria and redshirt senior William Meason each shot 80. Monday’s second round will get underway with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. Arkansas will play alongside Mississippi, Coastal Carolina and Lamar, going off holes 10-14.
