FAYETTEVILLE — The 20th-ranked University of Arkansas women’s golf team opens the 2006-07 season this weekend at the Mason Rudolph Championship in Nashville, Tenn. The Lady Razorbacks are coming off a program-best 10th-place finish at the NCAA Championship last year and junior Stacy Lewis put the cap on a stellar summer winning the 11th World University Games leading team USA to the team title last week. Lewis, a Woodlands, Texas, native, returned just in time to join teammates Alex Schulte, Ashley Medders, Lucy Nunn, Whitney Sylvan and Corinna Rees for the trip. "It’s always exciting as we prepare for our first tournament of the year," said Arkansas head coach Kelley Hester. "We’re kinda back where we were four years ago not knowing what to expect from a young team. Stacy is playing so well and with great confidence right now. We will most definitely look to her to lead the team." Although Lewis’ credentials are a golfer’s dream, she has a solid supporting cast. Medders and Nunn both have multiple events as Lady Razorbacks under their belts and both were at the Southeastern Conference, NCAA Regional and NCAA Championships last year. Medders competed in all three while Nunn was a spectator. Nunn actually cut her teeth in collegiate golf last year at this very event and played well out of the gates. "Lucy played great in Nashville last year," said Hester. "It would be great if one of our younger players jumped out of the blocks and made a statement at this meet." Arkansas will have it’s hands full with a talented field for their first event. Top-ranked and defending national champion Duke headlines the field along with No. 3 Georgia, No. 5 Purdue, No. 10 and host Vanderbilt, No. 11 Wake Forest, No. 12 Arizona, No. 17 Standford, No. 21 LSU and No. 24 Alabama. The Mason Rudolph Championship is the first of five fall events for Arkansas this year. For more information about the Lady Razorback golf team, log on to LADYBACKS.COM.
