BERKELEY, Calif. – The 24th-ranked Arkansas baseball team dropped the first game of its Sunday doubleheader at Cal by a final score of 4-3.
The Razorbacks (8-4) tied the game 1-1 in the top of the third inning before Cal (9-5) added two runs in the bottom of the inning. Arkansas threatened in the seventh and appeared to have added a run when Andrew Benintendi broke up a double play with a slide into second base but was called out on runner’s interference to end the inning. Eric Fisher blasted a two-run homer to right field that pulled Arkansas within one in the bottom of the eighth.
Chris Oliver(1-2) tied his single-game career high with 6.0 innings pitched but took the loss after allowing four runs on six hits and striking out four. Landon Simpson, Michael Gunn and Jackson Lowery came on in relief and allowed just one hit and no runs over the final two innings.
Arkansas and Cal are set to play again Sunday afternoon. Trey Killian will be the Razorbacks’ starter on the mound, with the Golden Bears countering with Michael Theofanopoulos.
