No. 25 Lady Razorbacks hold onto sixth at the SEC Golf Championship

Jump to second roundresults WEST POINT, Miss. – The 25th-ranked University of Arkansas women’s golf team took a bit of bad luck and parlayed it into a solid round to remain sixth after two days of the Southeastern Conference Women’s Golf Championship in West Point, Miss., Saturday. Arkansas began the day tied for sixth with No. 7 Florida and No. 5 Vanderbilt starting in the later tee times. Junior Stacy Lewis was the last Lady’Back to tee off from the 10th hole starting place and it was quickly evident there was a problem. Lewis, who suffers from chronic back pain, had tweaked her back while getting something out of her golf bag. She teed off, and played a couple more shots before having to withdraw from the round after one hole. The loss of Lewis, one of three strong contenders for SEC Golfer of the Year, could have been devastating but instead, the foursome on the course stepped up posting a 299 and keeping the Lady’Backs in sixth place with a 595 for the first two rounds. “We needed everyone today,” said assistant coach Shauna Estes. “I’m very proud of how we all stepped up and played hard. It really could have gotten away from us today but we didn’t let that happen. We had some very good individual performances but we also came together as a team in a tough situation.” Freshman Alex Schulte, a Broken Arrow, Okla., native, vaulted up the leaderboard with an even-par 72 and is tied for ninth place overall with a 146 (74-72) through two rounds. Schulte’s 72 is her second-best collegiate score and she is currently the lone Lady’Back in the top 10 individual standings. Schulte was plus one on the back nine where the Lady’Backs started the day but came in one-under through the front nine with four birdies in the round. Junior Ashley Medders, an Alma, Ga., native, equaled that with an even 72 as well. Medders shaved seven strokes off her opening round 79 and went into the club house with a 151 (79-72). She is tied for 28th overall. Medders was minus one on the back nine and had three birdies on Saturday. Freshman transfer Kristin Ingram of Pasadena, Calif., carded a four-over 76 on Saturday. Ingram is tied for 20th overall with a two-round 149 (73-76). Ingram was even on through the first nine holes but struggled coming in. Sophomore Lucy Nunn also played the first nine well only to struggle on the second half of the golf course. The Lawton, Okla., native, opened with a 76 on Friday only to post a 79 Saturday. Nunn is currently tied for 40th overall with a 155. Third-ranked Georgia moved up the leaderboard with a 291 and is even for the tournament with a 576 (285-291). Number 26 South Carolina posted the best round of the day with a 289 and is in second with 584. Tenth-ranked Tennessee is third with 588 (292-296), followed by No. 22 Alabama (291-300) and No. 7 Florida (296-295) tied for fourth with 591. Arkansas is just four strokes out of fourth with a 595. The Lady’Backs are being chased by No. 27 LSu in seventh with 597 (294-303) followed by No. 5 Vanderbilt (296-303=599), No. 4 Auburn (298-302=600), Mississippi State (312-295=607), Kentucky (308-308=616) and Mississippi (312-311=623) rounding out the field. Play concludes with an 8:30 a.m., shotgun start Sunday.
