No. 3 Georgia Too Much For Razorback Netters
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The No. 33 Arkansas men’s tennis team was beat Sunday by defending national champions Georgia, 7-0, at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga. The Razorbacks’ lone win of the dual came at No. 2 doubles as Colin Mascall and Dmitry Lebedev teamed to beat Luis Flores and Josh Varela, 8-7, the Razorback duo’s first win as a team.
Georgia (16-1, 6-0) picked up the doubles point with wins at the first and third doubles positions. Jamie Hunt and Nate Schnugg, the 31st-ranked team in the nation, defeated Blake Strode and Taylor King, 8-2 The Bulldogs clinched the point when Drake Bernstein and Travis Helgeson picked up an 8-3 win over Matt Hogan and Bradwin Williams.
Schnugg and Josh Varela gave the home team a 3-0 lead with wins at No. 2 and 6 singles, respectively. Schnugg, the eighth-ranked player in the nation, topped Mascall, 6-2, 6-1, while Varela also won in straight sets over Williams, 6-0, 6-1.
No. 63 Luis Flores clinched the match for the Bulldogs with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Lebedev. At No. 3 singles, No. 63 Hunt beat Hogan, 6-3, 6-3, to push Georgia’s lead to 5-0. Christian Vitulli followed with a win against Chris Nott, 6-4, 6-4.
Strode, No. 90 in the nation, pushed the sixth-ranked Helgeson, but fell in two tight sets, 6-4, 7-5, to complete the sweep for Georgia.
