NORMAN, Okla. – No. 11 Arkansas outscored No. 4 Oklahoma on floor and didn’t count a mistake for the night, but the Sooners won the other three events to claim a 195.425-195.075 victory in the gymnastics opener for both teams on Friday.
"We started off a little rough on bars," co-head coach Mark Cook said. "We tightened up. We anticipated that in the first meet of the season on the first event, but we fought through some mistakes. It was a little jittery, but we settled in on the next three events."
Individually, freshman Katherine Grable won the all-around title in her first meet for the Razorbacks. The Junior Olympic all-around national champion last year had a total of 39.225 points with a 9.825 on vault, 9.775 on bars, 9.80 on beam and 9.825 on floor.
Junior All-American Jaime Pisani tied for the floor title with a 9.875 and placed second in the all-around standings with a 39.15.
"We have some things to work on," Cook said. "All in all, you have to start somewhere. We have some things to fine tune, but we did a good job."
Following the first rotation, Oklahoma led a 49.00 on vault to Arkansas’ 48.625 on bars.
For the Razorbacks, Pisani posted a 9.80, followed by Grable at 9.775, Shelby Salmon 9.75, Natalie Bohonsky 9.675, senior All-American Michelle Stout 9.625 and Jordan Salsberg 8.650.
Sara Stone paced the Sooners with a 9.875.
After the second rotation, Oklahoma led 97.95-97.525.
Arkansas scored a 48.90 on vault while OU had a 48.95 on bars.
Pisani had a 9.85, Grable a 9.825, Stout a 9.75, Amanda Siebert a 9.75, and Salsberg and Scarlett Williams a 9.725.
OU was led on bars by Megan Ferguson with a 9.825.
Arkansas followed with a 48.925 on floor while the Sooners had a 48.70 on beam.
For the Razorbacks, Pisani had a 9.875, followed by Grable with a 9.825, Kelci Lewis a 9.775, Salsberg a 9.75, and Siebert and Bailee Zumwalde a 9.70.
Oklahoma was led by Ferguson with a 9.825.
"On vault and floor, we performed very well," Cook said. "On beam, we had some great routines."
Following three rotations, Oklahoma led 146.65-146.45.
In the final rotation, Arkansas had a 48.625 on beam while OU had a 48.775 on floor.
Grable scored a 9.80, followed by Williams with a 9.775, Salsberg a 9.725, Mariah Howdeshell a 9.70, Pisani a 9.625 and Bartlett a 9.525.
Kayla Nowak led Oklahoma on floor with a 9.875.
Five newcomers competed for Arkansas for the first time, and Cook was pleased.
"Katherine Grable was phenomenal," he said. "Shelby (Salmon) did a good job on bars and Jordan (Salsberg) had a couple of nice routines as well."
