No. 4 Razorbacks Collect Five NCAA Qualifiers

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The No. 4 University of Arkansas men’s track and field team qualified five individuals on day two of the 2014 NCAA West Preliminary. Noah Kittelson and Ken LeGassey will represent the Razorbacks in high jump at the 2014 NCAA Outdoor Championships, along with Patrick Rono and Tomas Squella in the 800-meter. In the final event of the night, Stanley Kebenei won his heat of the 3,000-meter steeplechase to earn his spot in Eugene, Ore. It was an exciting day in high jump for the Razorbacks as Kittelson and LeGassey earned qualifying marks to their first-career NCAA Championship appearances. LeGassey cleared perfectly through 7-1, sending the freshman to Eugene in his first season as a Razorback. “To come in and qualify as a freshman was great,” said LeGassey. “The last few weeks I haven’t performed that well, so to come out today and jump clean through 7-1, and with Noah by my side, that was a great feeling. I knew I had it in me, I knew I could do it, today was perfect timing.” The final spot within the top-12 was looking to be ruled a jump-off, but after careful review it was Kittelson receiving the 12th spot in the senior’s first trip to the NCAA Outdoor Championships. “To make it to nationals as a senior is the greatest feeling in the world,” said Kittelson. “I’m happy to have Kenny by my side. We’ve been working really hard all year. It’s great that it can all come together for a trip to nationals.” Arkansas’ Rono won his heat for an automatic qualifying spot in the 800-meter, clocking 1:48.98 for his advance to Eugene. He was followed by Squella, who earned the 12th spot overall with a time of 1:49.10. Kebenei was the fifth Razorback to qualify on Friday, winning his heat and finishing second overall in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 8:42.61. In first round events, Omar McLeod ran 13.7 in the 110-meter hurdles to advance to Saturday’s quarterfinal for a shot at the NCAA Championships. He will compete for a spot at Eugene Saturday 7:05 p.m. Friday’s qualifiers join Thursday’s qualifiers in Andrew Irwin (pole vault), Raymond Higgs (long jump) and Anthony May (long jump). The final day of competition will begin Saturday at 10 a.m. with women’s hammer throw. For more information on Razorback Track and Field, follow @RazorbackTF.
