No. 8 Florida tops No. 7 Razorbacks

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Arkansas’ seventh-ranked gymnastics team faced a tough road test Friday at No. 8 Florida in its Southeastern Conference opener and dropped a 196.575-195.925 decision to the Gators.

Arkansas (1-1) won the third rotation, but Florida won each event, including vault (49.250-48.90), bars (49.075-49.050), beam (49.00-48.90) and floor (49.20-49.075).

“The girls showed progress from the first meet to the second,” co-head coach Mark Cook said. “We did make a few errors. We have to tighten up and execute better, but this was good for the second meet of the year.”

Highlights for the Razorbacks were senior Casey Jo Magee winning the individual beam title with a 9.90, sophomore Jaime Pisani tying for the individual floor title with a 9.90, junior Stacy Bartlett matching her career best of 9.75 on floor, freshman Amanda Siebert posting a 9.75 on floor after the music stopped during her performance and freshman Kelci Lewis scoring a 9.825 on floor.

“This gives us confidence because we were on the road and didn’t count a fall,” Cook said. “We have to take that to Alabama next week.”

On the first rotation, Florida held a two-tenths of a pointlead with a 49.250 on vault while Arkansas posted a 49.050 on bars. The Razorbacks counted four scores of 9.8 or better, led by senior Amy DeFilippo’s 9.85 and Pisani’s 9.825. Magee and sophomore Mariah Howdeshell each had a 9.80 with senior Sarah Nagashima scoring a 9.775.

Florida counted three scores of 9.85 by Courtney Gladys, Maranda Smith and Nicole Ellis, and a 9.925 by event winner Ashanee Dickerson.

The Gators slightly expanded their margin on the second rotation, scoring a 49.075 on bars while Arkansas had a 48.9 on vault.

Magee had a 9.90 on vault for the Razorbacks, followed by Pisani at 9.875, Siebert at 9.825, Lewis at 9.80 and senior Sarah Nagashima at 9.50.

For the Gators on bars, Smith had a 9.875, Alicia Goodwin a 9.85 and Dickerson a 9.825.

Following the first two rotations, Florida led 98.325-97.950, but Arkansas cut into the deficit on the third rotation. The Razorbacks recorded a 49.075 on floor while Florida had a 49.00 on beam.

Along with 9.75s by Bartlett and Siebert, Pisani had a 9.90 to tie for the event win, Magee a 9.85 and Lewis a 9.825.

On beam for the Gators, Liz Green had a 9.85, and Dickerson, Stageberg and Rebekah Zaiser all 9.825s.

In the final rotation, Magee’s 9.90 on beam won the event and led Arkansas to a 48.90 team total. Nagashima had a 9.80, Pisani a 9.775, Bartlett a 9.725 and Amy DeFilippo a 9.70.

For Florida on floor, Dickerson had a 9.90 and Amy Ferguson a 9.85 as the Gators posted a 49.20.

“Casey Jo and Jaime were outstanding,” Cook said. “Stacy did a good job in her two events and Sarah was a strong all-arounder.”

Arkansas stays on the road next week as the Razorbacks travel to No. 4 Alabama for a 7:30 p.m. meet.
