Nolan Richardson Press Conference – Georgia

Nolan Richardson Press Conference – Georgia
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Arkansas travels to No. 15 Georgia (15-3, 4-0) for a 6:30 p.m. game on Wednesday, which is not televised. Arkansas (10-7, 2-3) is coming off a 70-64 loss to Ole Miss while Georgia won at Florida on Saturday, 84-79.

“Georgia is very good. They probably think we’re pretty good and a week ago, I thought we were. It’s amazing what can happen in a week. Anytime you go to Kentucky and to Florida and win, those are big wins. We can’t say ‘Georgia is 4-1 and won at Kentucky and Florida.’ We have to hope we do the right things, make some shots and be competitive. I don’t feel like we don’t have a chance to win. We’re down. LSU kind of burst our bubble and that set a pattern. We have to change that pattern, and sometimes you do that with players. I’m concerned about what I can do to make us better. I think anything can happen.”

Status of senior guard Brandon Dean (sprained right knee, bone bruise), who is questionable for Georgia game:

“He’s able to walk and has full range of motion. They say it’s amazing. It doesn’t hurt and the swelling is minimal. We’ll put him through some running drills. He doesn’t have a chance to play much (Wednesday), but it’s not as bad as it was. Chances look pretty good, according to Dave (England, trainer), that he will dress out at Georgia.

“This team needs a shot in the arm and that would be a shot in the arm because we had planned to go four to six weeks without him. He’s not going to be full speed and we don’t know how long that will take, but it’s better than having him out four weeks.”

Changing lineup to include more forwards:

“My job is to fix things and the things we put together aren’t working because we aren’t shooting the ball as well as we did earlier in the year. The thing hurting us the most is second-chance points, then getting to the free throw line and then turnovers. We need to win the possession game and we haven’t done a good job of that. We need to start more forwards. Our guards have done as well as they can but we have to limit teams to one shot as much as possible. That’s our focus. We can’t try to catch up in a hurry or beat someone in a hurry. In the games we won, our guards had some rebounds. In the games we lost, they’ve had two or three. We think if we increase our size on the floor and our chance for getting second-chance points, it will help. Right now, if Berry (Jordan) or Dionisio (Gomez) don’t get it, we don’t get it.”

Possible starting lineup:

“Right now, the first group I’m going to look at is (Jannero) Pargo, T.J. (Cleveland), (Dionisio) Gomez, Berry (Jordan) and (Alonzo) Lane.
“T.J. has to play himself into having a good year. He’s always coming in trying to help us get out of something and the pressure is always on. He’s the closest thing to a point guard we have. He comes up with loose balls. His game is not based on jump shots. We need somebody to offset some things.

“Berry, we think, now has a job. He has to get us some rebounds. He doesn’t have to score, but he needs to get us some rebounds.

“We’ve got to get Lane going. He’s had it going, but we haven’t been getting him the ball. T.J. is the only one who consistently gets the ball inside.”
