CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – In Saturday’s second day of the Virginia 1-Plus-1 men’s tennis tournament, Arkansas’ Christopher Nott and Matthew Hogan claimed victories in both singles and doubles.
Nott, ranked No. 41 in singles, beat Jorge Varon of East Tennessee, 6-3, 6-2, after topping Ivan Sanchez of North Carolina State on Friday. He lost in the third round in his second match of the day, 6-2, 6-2 to Virginia’s Sanam Singh. He plays for third place in Flight A-2 on Sunday.
Hogan won two matches to advance to the consolation finals of Flight A-3. He beat Virginia’s Santiago Villegas, 6-1, 6-7, 7-5, and Virginia Tech’s Patrick Dociek, 6-3, 6-2.
In doubles, the pair combined for an 8-3 win over Jon Jaklitsch and Evan Bernstein of Cornell to claim third place in Flight A-4.
"It was a great day at a very high-caliber tournament," head coach Robert Cox said. "We started off the day with a good doubles victory and then both got victories in singles. We’re getting better every day and I’m proud of how these guys are carrying the Arkansas flag high."
Arkansas is a combined 6-3 in the tournament going into Sunday’s final day.
Nott faces No. 52 Luka Somon of Virginia Tech for third place in Flight A-2 on Sunday. Hogan plays North Carolina’s William Parker for the consolation championship of Flight A-3.
