Ole Miss Eliminates Arkansas From SEC Tourname

Hoover, Ala. — Chad Sterbens’ two-out single in the bottom of the 11th inning drove home the winning run to cap a two-run rally as the fifth-seeded Ole Miss Rebels eliminated eighth-seeded Arkansas from the Southeastern Conference Tournament with an 8-7 victory Friday afternoon.

Arkansas dropped to 34-20 overall, while Ole Miss improved to 34-24.
Charley Boyce (5-5) took the loss for Arkansas after going two innings and surrendering two runs, both unearned, on two hits with one strikeout .
Brian Pettway (1-0) got the win after pitching one-third of an inning without allowing a base runner.
Andrew Wishy put the Razorbacks on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning with a two-run home run to right-center off Beam. The home run was Wishy’s eighth and it came with Nick Pitts (single) aboard to give the Hogs a 2-0 lead.
The Rebels got a pair of singles to open the bottom of the first and made it a 2-1 game when Stephen Head singled home Jonathan Swearingen from third. Seth Smith, who reached on a fielder’s choice, moved to third on the play and scored on a ground out to first by Chad Sterbens to tie the game at 2-2.
Back-to-back doubles gave the Hogs a 3-2 lead in the top of the fourth inning. Brady Toops and Clay Goodwin eached doubled to right to open the fourth. With one out, Scott Bridges single to center to score Goodwin and push the Arkansas lead to 4-2.
With one out in the fifth the Rebels mounted a rally. Smith doubled home Swearingen to cut the deficit to 4-3. Head followed with a double down the right field line to score Smith and even the game at 4-4.
Sterbens then hit a ball to shallow center that fell in for a double and moved Head to third. Following Sterbens’ double, Roehl was brought in to relieve Sawatski. Brian Pettway gave Ole Miss its first lead of the day with a sacrifice fly to left that scored Head and gave the Rebels a 5-4 lead.
Ole Miss added to its lead after taking advantage of an Arkansas miscue in the sixth. Matt Tolbert reached on infield single. With Charlie Waite at bat, Scott Bridges dropped a foul ball that would have ended the inning. Waite took advantage by hitting a triple to right that Wishy lost in the sun. Tolbert scored on the play to give the Rebels a 6-4 lead.
Pitts moved into scoring position in the seventh after reaching on a single, his fourth hit of the day. Pitts moved to second a ground out and advanced to third when the pitcher threw wild to second a failed pickoff. Wishy then chopped to third who forced Pitts out in a rundown for the second out of the inning. Wishy moved to second during the rundown and came in to score on single to left by Haas Pratt.
Pratt was thrown out attempting to go to second on the play to end the inning with the Hogs trailing 6-5.
In the eighth, Toops was hit by a pitch and Goodwin single to right to put runners and first and second with no outs. With one strike on Ryan Fox, the Razorbacks put Kirk McConnell in to pinch-hit. McConnell put down a sacrifice bunt that moved the runners to second and third with one out.
Chris Williams then pinch-hit for Bridges who chopped back to the pitcher for the second out of the inning. With Scott Hode at bat, Beam threw a wild pitch that allowed Toops to score and tie the game at 6-6. Goodwin advanced to third on the play, but was unable to score as Hode grounded out to shortstop.
The Razorbacks took a 7-6 lead in the 11th on an infield single by Wishy that scored Hode, but the Rebels battled back in the bottom half of the inning to capture the win.
Arkansas will now wait a possible NCAA Regional bid. NCAA bids will be announced Monday, May 26 at 11:30 a.m. The announcement will be carried live by ESPN2.
