Ortiz And Garza Catch Fire At Pebble Beach

CARMEL, Calif. – A pair of 6-under 66’s from senior Alvaro Ortiz and sophomore Luis Garza led Arkansas to a 6-under 354 during the second round of the Carmel Cup on Saturday at Pebble Beach Golf Club.

The Razorbacks have matching rounds of 354-354 – 708 (-12) and are alone in sixth place as three of the top seven teams in the country make up the top five. The Razorbacks are nine strokes ahead of conference foe and 27th-ranked Georgia and sit 12 shots clear of Ohio State.

Ortiz continues to torch Pebble Beach, posting his ninth round under par in 11 collegiate rounds after Saturday’s 6-under 66 that featured seven birdies and one bogey. He birdied two of the first three holes and made the turn with a bogey-free 3-under 33. He went on to make four consecutive pars on the back nine, before stringing together three straight birdies. A bogey on 17 and birdie on 18 gave the Zapopan, Mexico, native his second 6-under 66 at the historic course.

During his last five rounds at Pebble Beach, Ortiz has combined to shoot 20-under with all five rounds in red figures. His rounds this week of 70-66 – 136 (-8) have him within striking distance of the leaders at T-6th overall.

Not to be outdone, Garza matched his teammate with a 6-under 66 of his own, rolling in seven birdies, including four on the back nine. He made three straight birdies on the front nine, and ended his round with three consecutive birdies to record his lowest collegiate round to par. He sits T-12th overall at 72-66 – 138 (-6).

William Buhl, Charles Kim and Dylan Naidoo all recorded 2-over 74’s, while Mason Overstreet came off an opening round 65 and posted a second-round 5-over 77.

The Carmel Cup features a rare format with six players per team and the top five counting scores contributing to each round’s total. The Razorbacks return to the course Sunday morning at 9 a.m. CT for the final round with live stats available at Golfstat.com or via the Golfstat Live app.
