ATHENS, Ga. – Arkansas junior Oskar Johansson will begin play at the 2000 NCAA Men’s Tennis Championships Wednesday, May 24. The tournament is held in Athens, Ga. and is hosted by the University of Georgia.
Johansson’s first opponent will be Jeremy Bayon of Mississippi State. The two did not play against each other this season.
Johansson, a first team all-Southeastern Conference selection, is currently ranked nineteenth by the International Tennis Association, while his opponent is ranked 52nd.
If Johansson is successful in the first round he will play the winner of the Tyler Cleveland of Iowa and Esteban Carrill of Texas Christian match. Johansson defeated Cleveland in the second round of the Rolex Indoor Championships held in February. He won 6-2, 2-6, 6-2.
He is also familiar with TCU’s Carrill. Carrill defeated Johansson 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, in a dual match at the No. 1 position in Ft. Worth, Texas.
Johansson finished the regular season with a 26-15 record, including a 6-4 record in the SEC. Playing at the No. 1 spot, he earned a 8-9 record facing the nation’s best players.
The Johansson and Bayon match will begin May 24, at 12:30 p.m.
