Overstreet Impresses In NCAA Championship Debut

Round 1 Results

SUGAR GROVE, Ill. – University of Arkansas freshman Mason Overstreet made his NCAA National Championship debut on Friday as an individual, firing a 2-under 70 to sit T-9th after the morning wave at Rich Harvest Farms.

As one of six individuals in the field, Overstreet rolled in four birdies on the day and had a double bogey on the par four 10th hole to sign for a 2-under 70. He birdied two of the four par fives on the course and is tied for the low round among individual players. He is four strokes behind tournament leader Braden Thornberry from Ole Miss.

He continues to play the best golf of his young career, posting five rounds under par in 33 regular season rounds, before signing for three rounds in red figures during seven postseason rounds. Overstreet has at least one round under par in the SEC Championship, NCAA Regional and NCAA Championship.

Overstreet is the fourth individual in school history to advance to the National Championship, joining R.H. Sikes in 1963, Bud Still in 1995 and Craig Lile in 2000. Sikes captured the program’s only individual NCAA Championship in 1963.

The afternoon wave of the opening round is currently underway with impending weather likely to alter play Friday afternoon. Overstreet continues play at the NCAA Championship Saturday afternoon, going off No. 10 tee at 2:17 p.m.
