Overstreet Leads Field, Hogs Fourth in Alabama

Day 1 Results | Final Round Pairings

VESTAVIA HILLS, Ala. – On a 36-hole day at the Jerry Pate Intercollegiate, the No. 16 Arkansas men’s golf team recorded the third-lowest round in program history and sophomore Mason Overstreet leads the field at Old Overton Country Club.

After posting a 6-over 286 in the morning, Arkansas entered the afternoon round on the back nine and quickly shot up the leaderboard. The Razorbacks tallied 23 birdies and two eagles to record an 11-under 269, good for the third-best round in school history. The 269 is one shot off last year’s SEC Championship final round 268 and two strokes off the record, set at the 2003 TaylorMade Intercollegiate.

Overstreet continues to stay locked in, opening his day with a 5-under 65 that featured a stretch of three birdies and one eagle in a five-hole span. He came back in the afternoon with four consecutive birdies to fuel another 5-under 65 as he raced to the top of the leaderboard and currently leads the field of 60 players by one shot. The Kingfisher, Oklahoma, native eagled two different par fours on the day to lead him to the best 36-hole stretch of his career.

Overstreet has seven consecutive rounds under par, while 10 of his 11 rounds this year have been in red figures. He is a combined 29-under par this season heading into Tuesday’s final round where he will go for his first collegiate victory.

William Buhl continued his strong play on Monday, posting rounds of 74-66 – 140 (E) to sit T-19th overall and second on the team. His 4-under 66 in the afternoon was his second 66 in his last three rounds and his fourth round in red figures in the last three tournaments.

Alvaro Ortiz (T-28th) and Luis Garza (T-31st) both contributed 1-under 69’s to Arkansas’ historic afternoon round and are separated by one shot on the leaderboard.

No. 4 and host Alabama leads the tournament at 16-under, while No. 7 Baylor is second at 14-under and No. 21 BYU is third at 9-under. The Razorbacks are 11 shots off the lead at 5-under and lead No. 11 Auburn by five strokes.

Arkansas will tee off Tuesday morning in the final round at 8 a.m. with Auburn and UNLV.
