Pair of Sophomores Lead Arkansas to Victory

NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark – Sophomores T.J. Cleveland and Brandon Dean rescued Arkansas from an otherwise struggling effort as the Razorbacks downed Texas-Pan American 70-56 at Alltel Arena on Wednesday night.
Cleveland, making his first collegiate start, nailed five three-pointers on his way to an 18-point effort to lead the Razorbacks (5-2) in scoring. Dean chipped 17 points after hitting seven of nine from the field.
Arkansas continued to struggle shooting the ball hitting only six of 25 from beyond the three-point arc and only 10 of 31 free throws.
“The effort was there, but we just couldn’t shoot it,” Arkansas head coach Nolan Richardson said. “We missed a lot of shots. We couldn’t get into a rhythm because we couldn’t get any shots down. T.J. Cleveland had a good first start. He was the only guy hitting some shots.”
Texas-Pan American’s Brian Merriweather led all scorers with 28 points in the losing effort. The Broncs fell to 1-5 on the season with the loss.
Razorback sophomore Teddy Gipson scored 11 points and Dionisio Gomez earned nine rebounds. Senior Chris Walker garnered only four points, but led the Hogs with 10 rebounds.
Arkansas returns to Bud Walton Arena on Saturday when the Hogs host the Mercer Bears. The Razorbacks beat the Bears 71-54 earlier this season in the first round of the Big Island Invitational at Hilo, Hawaii. Game time is set for 7:05 for the contest that will be televised by the Arkansas Razorback Sports Network.
