FAYETTEVILLE – The University of Arkansas women’s tennis team resumed play at the 2013 USTA/ITA Central Regional Championship in Norman, Okla., on Saturday, asYang Pangearned a pair of wins and advanced in the singles tournament.
The sophomore from Nanjing, China, began her day with a come-from-behind win over Palma Juhasz of Kansas State, falling in the first set before rallying and winning the final two to take the match, 5-7, 6-4, 6-3. Entering the tournament ranked No. 43 in the nation by the ITA, Pang followed up with a second win over Izabella Zgierska of Nebraska, 6-4, 7-6 (6).
Playing amongst a field featuring some of the best collegiate competition, Pang’s performance was even more impressive considering she had just earned five straight wins in doubles play the day before and advanced to the doubles tournament finals with teammate Kimberley – Ann Surin.
"Today was a battle, obviously, considering the length of yesterday," head coach Michael Hegarty said. "Credit Nicky for finding a way to advance to the Sweet 16 tomorrow."
Pang continues the pursuit of a singles tournament title when she faces senior Kanyapat Narattana of Oklahoma State to begin her day on Sunday.
Surin also competed in singles play on Saturday, but fell to Maggy Lehmicke of Nebraska, 6-4, 6-3. Sarah McLean also began her weekend with singles play, but was defeated by Iowa’s Katie Zordani, 1-6, 6-5, 6-0.
